You need to go through the UK Immigration control if you want to go out of the airport. It requires a valid visa to enter the UK. A visitor in transit visa could let you go out of the airport upto 48 hours. Check the link below.

I have checked this link and tried to apply through visa4uk fco website but in this transit visa category there are application dealing with three type of visas
1- ship port change
2- DATV - direct airside transit visa (in which we can just chnge the terminal to catch another flight)
3- Visitor in transit

And in the last category they ask a question that
Would you meet your relatives? Yes/no

If we say yes then the message appears that you can cross the border but if you want to meet the relatives and sight seeing activity than this visa is not that type.

Im confused as no other transit visa is appropriate.


Can anyone tell whether they are able to get out by convincing immigration officer after reaching the airport.

Immigration officials can be convinced only with a valid visa in the UK

If you say you will visit relatives, you should apply for a standard family visitor visa for £85.

Ok what i get from what you say is that i should apply for the visa and i will tell them i will not visit family
And once i cross the border i am free to see them

Is this conclusion correct ? If yes, then i am gonna go for it
N yes bro can u tell the approx time if i apply now for this transit visa. As i have flight to catch on 23 december.

Please check the processing times. When I applied for UK student visa. I filled and paid for application through visa4uk and submitted in VFS.

Transit visa should take less time like one week or so. Check the required documents and apply only if you are sure you have all.

A family visitor visa takes around 2 weeks but they give 6 month multiple entry.
