I'm Canadian and my US wife who is here under Visitor Status is still waiting for a decision. We sent in my Sponsorship papers in mid July for me to sponsor her. She also sent in her Permanent Residency Application and Work Visa Application. We sent everything to Vegreville Alberta as directed.

How can we check the status of the applications?

One snag we just found out about, and hoping it is incorrect. First, we took almost a year to fill out all the forms completely and very detailed, took them to an immigration lawyer who said they were very well done. Both he and many people from the Immigration Hotline said NOT to send in the fee for Permanent Residency until a letter was sent back for the Sponsorship, which is paid for as well as the Work Visa fee. The problem is, my wife spoke to 2 people from a different immigration firm and they both said she was absolutely supposed to send in the fee right away, and not doing so will stall the Sponsorship and they will not even look at it until it is all paid for in full, the PR fee they say.

Second, she has 3 children who is not accompanying her at present and live with their father who has sole physical custody in the US and she only has joint legal custody. This new firm said that she is absolutely in the wrong by putting down that her children will NOT be accompanying her on the forms, they said that with saying they are not accompanying her will result in them NEVER being allowed to come to Canada??? What we did do is make sure they had their medical's done, photos etc.. but they are not accompanying her at present. They also told her that it will cost $300 per child to send in the corrected forms to CIC

So, does she need to pay for the PR NOW?
Do I need to amend the Sponsorship with forms for each child accompanying her even if they are not?

Thanks in advance.

From what I understand, Vegreville takes a considerable longer time at 8-9 months and further, from what I understand, you don't hear anything for quite a while and have no way to check the status. other than the website - where it says they are processing November 28, 2009 at the moment.

I am not familar with the inland process, but outland, you do not have to pay the right of landing fee right away, but it may slow the process if you don't.

As far as I know, medicals & photos were exactly what to do if they were not accompanying her, as well.

I hope someone else can chim in for you.
