I am sending off the application to sponsor my spouse next month. I was wondering if he could travel to Canada in the summer before the approval. We are living in the US. Thanks.

Americans are usually let in. Bring proof of his ties to the States - letter from employer, proof of money in the bank, his name on a lease or mortgage, etc.; and bring a copy of the application, any letter you get from CIC saying you are approved as a sponsor, and the fee receipt. He should say he is visiting, not moving to Canada.

Wow, that sounds a little tricky though. I don't want to screw things up...maybe our trip to Calgary can wait.

Probably. Is your spouse a US citizen?

I've visited my spouse in Canada several times after submitting my application. It's recommended to carry proof that you'll return--letter from the employer, copy of the lease, that sort of thing. I also carry a printout of my itinerary with the return flight and a copy of the receipt and other communications we've received from the CIC about my application.

I've only ever needed the itinerary, and only the first time I was visiting him. Every other time I've just been waved through. Of course, it's always better to be overprepared.

If your spouse is from the US or another visa-exempt country s/he can probably visit you the same way I can visit mine. If not, there will may be issues getting a visitor's visa with the spousal application in progress.

Isometry is right, US citizens are usually waved through, but it never hurts to be prepared to be questioned on your intentions. So, if you guys are just going up to visit, have the mentioned proofs of ties to the US handy, just in case.

I should mention, the time I had to show the itinerary:

1. I had just gotten my passport renewed, so it didn't show any of my previous trips outside the US (some of which were to Canada!)

2. We weren't married yet. I was visiting my boyfriend, not my husband

3. I left my apartment at 9 or 10am my time. I took a bus, a bus and a train to get to the airport. Then a trolley and an airplane and a trolley and an airplane and a trolley and an airplane. It was 3am my time by the time I got to Edmonton and I was sleepy and irritable.

4. We didn't have anything planned. When the customs guy asked what my plans were there, what I was actually going to do, I sort of ummed around a bit and probably looked really evasive.

5. I was visiting Edmonton in February and staying more than a week, and I only brought a backpack for luggage. (Hey, February's basically spring, right? I can put all my clothes in this backpack and then just wear a jacket and maybe a hat. WTF SNOW)

Note: Runaways bring a backpack. Tourists put everything they own into six suitcases. I probably looked like a runaway.

6. The customs guy sent me through the immigration bit and I was confused as to why I had to do that. By the time I realized what they wanted, it was basically, "OH! Here's my itinerary see I really am going back". The immigration lady went "OH okay then. Here's your passport stamp". It would have been a lot easier if I'd been prepared for it.

Thanks alot eveyone.
