Hi,
I plan to study French in Montreal for 6-12 months. My husband will move with me. In the longer term we would like to stay in Canada. I have researched on the immigration websites but am unsure on some points. Three questions:
1) I have read on the cic website that your spouse can get a work permit for the duration of your study. Is this really possible? Has anyone done this?
2) My husband may have a freelance job working for a UK company and paid into a UK bank account. He can work remotely. Is he allowed to do this freelance work in Canada without a work permit (if he can't get one)?
3) How likely is it that we will be accepted to stay in Canada after my studies?
thanks in advance.

I would recommend that you do some additional research about the various immigration programs available to make Canada your home. Studying 6-12 months alone will not be enough to qualify you for immigration to Canada.

Start reading here:

I would recommend you look at the Canadian Experience Class program - and also at the immigration programs specifically linked to Quebec.

As an example, to qualify to apply for the Canadian Experience Class program - you would need to graduate from a Canadian post secondary institution AND have at least one year of full time skilled work experience in Canada.

thanks for your reply, I'll have another look. In the shorter term, how about my questions about spouse's work permit / freelancing whilst I'm on a study visa.

Thanks.
