Hello,
I am an American citizen, I came to Canada (Ontario) to be with my fiance, who is pregnant, and I help take care of her current 2 year old boy. She is currently on welfare while going to school, so I believe she is ineligible to sponsor me. Although, her parents and grandparents both have offered to do so if it is possible, I will also be living under their roof if they are able to. I do not fit under any skilled worker classes, but would be able to start working anything random, factories, automotive, etc. even minimum wage jobs. I just first need to be able to. I came here December 23, so I have to apply for my extension by June 23. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot,
Matt

As far as I am aware of, and this is just my 2 bits here... No her parents cannot sponsor you, she would have to sponsor you herself. And yes her being on welfare will disqualify her to sponsor you. You need to prove to the visa officer that if they adopt you to Canada that you guys won't be a drain on the system. That includes any welfare and that you aren't bankrupt or in any huge masses of debt with credit cards or line of credit. Its gonna be a tough road in that aspect. Perhaps as an alternative she comes with you to the U.S? just a thought is all

No - her parents/grandparents cannot sponsor you.

Just because there's a lot of confusion over the term, can you specify what program she's receiving money from? It may not actually be welfare as far as the CIC is concerned.

Also - she can only sponsor you once you are married or common-law, which means living together for one year as if you were married.

She receives baby bonus for her 2 year old, and Board and Lodge shelter from Social Services while she is in school.

Just a side note here ,Cic don't care how much debt you carry in credit cards, you don't have to give them any information when sponsoring a spouse. Bay bonus is not welfare every one who earns under a certain amount of money collects this,as for housing allowance i'm not sure as she is in school. However she will have to have filed taxes for you to get an option c if you go the route of common law or you get married . No you have no other option but to find out about the monies she is receiving ,get off that and apply for sponsorship .

To be clear, "board and lodge shelter" from Social Services, IS welfare.

There is only 1 option for you here, in which you must do the following:
1. She needs to get off welfare/social assistance, and get a letter from the government indicating she was removed from their active recipient list. Technically she doesn't need to get off welfare until she actually intends to submit your PR application, but many people have had problems even when on welfare in the recent past, so it's best to get off this as soon as possible.
2. You need to become common-law (live together 12 months) or get married, and only then can she sponsor you for PR

Unfortunately since you most likely don't qualify for a work permit under NAFTA, you may be going a long time without being able to work here.

Thanks truemile wasn't sure what that was, sometimes when students are in school the government sudsides housing...so wasn't clear.

You can only be on social assistance and be a sponsor if it's for reasons of disability. This can include things like mental health as well. Do you know specifically what she is on social assistance for? If it's for unemployment then you'll need to proceed as Rob_TO outlined.

No one can sponsor you except her.
