Hello friends,
I have a question. I live in NY about an hour away from where my husband lives and works. Once I land, do I have to remain in Canada for a certain amount of time? Or can I land and move in with him and establish my Canadian residency, including apply for a Sin, after 3 months apply and pay for Health Care...while commuting to my job in NY? I wasn't sure if I had to cut all ties in order to establish residency. Does anyone have any advice, links or similar experiences?

You certainly can. Residency issue sounds interesting but simply due to the fact that you're living with your husband (every night of the week no less), you would be meeting RO. Is there a Nexus lane where you would cross to go to work? If so I would highly recommend that you get a Nexus card. The fee is $50 for five years and you start that process now.

Btw, you wouldn't have to pay for Healthcare. You will get it simply by being a resident.

:D :D :D

Thank you for the response Truesmile!

There is a nexus lane that I can cross at near us that I could use. But i now have another question you said "living with your husband (every night of the week no less" how would it work if in the winter I needed to stay at my parents if the conditions were not good to drive in? What are the consequences if I don't drive home to Ontario every single night? Or is it I just need to be there more then anywhere else? I know if I end up needing to stay in NY a night or 2 without him that would count against me for citizenship, but does it for residency?

Yes, it would. But RO is only 2 years out of 5, so that shouldn't be a problem. I keep a spreadsheet going for me and my wife, as it seems I usually return from Philippines before she does. I run a calculation for RO and another one for citizenship.

For the online enrollment for Nexus, simply Google GOES and it's the top couple of hits.

awesome! Thank you for the explanation! How exactly do you put together your spread sheet? I think is a great idea for keep track!
