Hi everyone,

I need some advice. I recently moved from Quebec to Ontario (Ottawa) on April 1, 2026. I have fully established my residence here: lease, Ontario driver’s license (G2), OHIP, car registration and insurance, bank statements showing only Ottawa spending, and official letters from RAMQ and SAAQ confirming I left Quebec.

I am now preparing to sponsor my wife (outland,). However, I lost my job on April 23, 2026 (position was eliminated due to restructuring). Before that, I had a good salary, and my 2025 Notice of Assessment shows 65,000 income.Ihaveabout10,000 in savings.

Currently, I am doing Uber Eats in Ottawa to show local activity and income. I am also actively looking for a stable job in Ottawa (I have proof of applications to federal and municipal positions). My application is being processed.

My question: Does my current unemployment (temporary, with Uber and savings, and few month of employement insurrance) put the sponsorship at risk? Should I wait until I find another full-time job in Ontario, or can I apply now?

Thank you for your insights.

I plan to submit the sponsorship application around May 11, 2026 (I will then have two full months of bank statements showing only Ottawa expenses, plus my NOA, lease, etc.).

My question: Does my current unemployment (temporary, with Uber and savings, and few month of employement insurrance) put the sponsorship at risk? Should I wait until I find another full-time job in Ontario, or can I apply now?

As long as you can continue to show you can support your family financially without the need for government support like welfare you should be fine. Once you find full-time employment you should update your application.
