Hi everyone, please can I sponsor my sister if she is already in Canada with a temporary work permit? I don't have a partner, kids or parent to sponsor and I don't have any other family members who are permanent resident or Canadian citizen. Will it be an issue because she is already in Canada? Thanks for your answer.

If you don't have :
  • spouse
  • common-law partner
  • conjugal partner
  • son or daughter
  • parent
  • grandparent
  • orphaned sibling
  • orphaned nephew or niece
  • orphaned grandchild

There is no issue but keep in mind that processing times are long and submitting the application does not give her maintained status in Canada. So she will need to find a way to keep her status legal independently.

I assume both of your parents are deceased.

My sister's work permit will be expired in 2028. Do you think the sponsorship process will take more time than that? I couldn't find a processing time for other family members in Canada.

My sister is the one in Canada with temporary status. I don't have any other relative in Canada with permanent status.
If you have any other relative from the list above, you canot sponsor your sister, no matter where they are or what their status.

You need to meet 2 requirements:

1. You don’t have any relative who are PR or citizen;
2. And you don’t have any relative from the list above.

If you meet both criteria, then you can sponsor your sister.

That may be long enough. Processing time is generally around 3 years.

Or the other way:
You can sponsor your sister if she is an orphan and she doesn't meet the following:
  • 1 or both of her parents is still alive
  • no one knows where parents are
  • parents abandoned her
  • someone else other than parents is taking care of while 1 or both parents are alive
  • parents are in jail or otherwise detained
