I'm a U.S. citizen currently working in Canada. I'm renewing my U.S. passport, and need to submit my current passport in the mail with my application. Last time I renewed my work permit, they stapled it into my passport (I'm not sure why - they had just given it to me as a separate document previous times). Should I (and am I permitted to) remove the work permit from the passport so that I can keep it while I'm without my passport? I presumably shouldn't need it in the weeks before I receive my old passport back, but I have been told in the past to keep the work permit with me, and I feel a bit uneasy about letting it out of my sight.

So, to be brief, am I allowed to remove my work permit from my passport?

Thanks.

I think it's ok if you remove it from your passport, I never got my study/work permits stapled on mine.

Since they return your old passport together with the new one,
I think you better take a photocopy.
