Hey everyone,

I have a closed work permit valid until 2029, but I was laid off in January. My employer initially expected work to restart, but the contract didn’t go through.

I’m currently in India, and I no longer have a job with that employer.

My PR is in process (CEC inland, AOR Feb 26).

I want to return to Canada to look for a new job, apply for another permit (e.g., francophone mobility), or wait for PR.

Can I re-enter Canada with a valid closed WP but no job, or is that risky?

You can try but the fact that you are no longer employed by the company could raise concerns about why you are returning to Canada. I would make sure you have proof of significant savings in case you are asked to prove how you will support yourself because there could be concerns that you will try to work without a valid WP.

Technically your close work permit goes invalid as soon as you laid off from the job as it is tied to your employer. I would suggest you to consult with license immigration consultant or lawyer.

You can , but what’s the point ?
Your reason being in Canada was tied to you working at the job you held a closed work permit it for .

Visitor Status: Individuals with visitor status generally cannot apply for a work permit from inside Canada. You’d be a visitor , so applying for a LMIA while you’re in Canada isn’t going to happen
Why not just wait in India for PR approval?
Have no clue WHY people want to complicate things

It doesn't. But there could be some issues if you try to enter Canada and you are asked questions about employment status which is rare. Usually an officer just checks work permit validity dates and that's all.
