Can I go back Canada with PR card only, without passport?

For PR, I know PR card (or PRTD) is a must. Then is passport still needed for examination by the border officer?

It's needed for commercial travel, but at a land PoE, only showing a PR Card (even if expired, but expect to be questioned about it) gets you back into Canada. It's a moot point though, since you need a valid passport to enter another country from Canada (even driving across the border)

I was talking about coming back Canada only (my passport expired, but PR card still valid), does Canada port of entry (by air) requires passport for PR?

Are you American and flying from the US?

Yes. You will need to renew your passport to return to, or depart from, Canada by any means of commercial travel.
