hello all..

Can I exit Canada with an expired passport if the destination is my home country?
I'm a permanent resident, and my passport is not canadian. But will need to go to my home country to renew it for 5 years instead of the 1 year I'd get if I renew it in Ottawa.

Thanks
A

Ask your home country -- this has nothing to do with Canada. Usually, foreign nationals can get either a new passport or a travel document at their embassy in Ottawa or (if lucky) a regional consulate. Different countries have different regulations about showing up in person to apply for these, it varies quite a bit. My wife can get a new passport in Vancouver, but not Calgary.

You can't board an international flight to anywhere, on an expired passport.

I've done it before. traveled with my expired passport from a different country to my home country, it was only possible because my destination was the country of the passport I'm holding.

But I'm wondering if that would be possible to do from Canada as well?

Call the airline and ask.
I've never heard of this being done from an airline in Canada before.

If you've traveled to your home country with an expired passport, then why are you asking? Canada doesn't have exit controls, so nothing in this situation is going to be mediated by 'Canada', it's between your home country, you, and the airline.

Especially as a great deal of embarrassment was felt in a certain airline recently for allowing two passengers to board on stolen passports. I suspect that exit and boarding security has been increased all over the world...

I just called a couple of airlines and they confirmed that they have no problems boarding me with my expired passport.
The airline had to check with on my homecountry's rules, and it said im allowed to enter it with an expired passport. So the airline has no problems with it as long as my country doesnt have a problem with it. And Canada's no exit control makes it easier.

That's a new one for me if true. I always assumed valid passports were mandatory for any international flight simply as a way to confirm identity, regardless where one was flying to.
I would make sure you actually check with the airline you intend to fly with, as they will have the only say in this.

Note that whether to board you or not will be at discretion of several people you will need to show your passport to at the airport, regardless of what an Air Canada call centre person has told you. So while technically it should be possible, if any of the original check-in person, security person, or final gate board check person notices the passport is expired and wants to make an issue out of it not being valid for travel, you may have problems. Not everyone is familiar with all the rules around this and since airlines can be fined heavily for delivering people that they shouldn't have, it's less risk for for them to simply deny you boarding at let you figure it out.

Also make sure you are getting on a direct flight to your home country, with no stopovers.

And make sure you arrive to the flight as early as possible, in case there are any issues and you need to spend time resolving it.
