Can I apply for TRV right after submitting SOWP?

So I am currently on my PGWP that expires on October 6th 2026. I have received my AOR on August 25th. (Common Law Partner in Canada Class). I have already submitted an application for an Open Work Permit. Now, I have an expired TRV, from my first entry to Canada (haven't travelled outside Canada since original entry).

My question:

I have a trip coming up to Mexico on January 28th, 2027 with my common law partner. At what stage should I apply for a TRV? Can I do it now, based on the AOR and OWP submission confirmation? Would that only give me a new TRV based on my current PGWP expiry? (October 6th, 2026) or would they consider it for longer than that based on my submissions?

Or should I be waiting for a few weeks/months to get my OWP approval letter on my IRCC account, and apply for a TRV right after?

I am not sure if I will be able to receive a stamp on my passport before January 28th next year.

Would love your advice.

Better wait, if you can't, you can definitely apply based on PGWP, but most likely it won't be even processed by the PGWP expiration date.

Also, if I were to apply for a TRV right now, can I explain the situation to the officer through a Letter Of Explaination? Regarding the travel plans etc?

That would be the last step, if everything fails. It's booked with my partners family and around 8 of us are travelling. I would really love to go man. I haven't taken a vacation in 5 long years.

The big issue is the that your ability to apply and get a new TRV while in Canada is dependent on your OWP approval.

I see! So the best option is to hope for a speedy approval.

If my common-law PR application is already processing, and I have a valid OWP and TRV, and the fact that I would potentially be travelling with my common-law partner, would it cause any issues? Would my application be cancelled or forfeit? I read somewhere on reddit that it is discouraged to the leave the country when the PR application in that Family Sponsorship class is in processing.

IRCC seems to overlook short periods of time out of Canada (a normal vacation time period) but would not suggest going abroad for over a month if you applied inland.

As long as you have a valid TRV or are visa exempt you should be fine. Hopefully you’ll have your OWP by then. I hope you get the TRV in time. Would not rely on the posted pressing times. Would ask about recent experiences to get a more realistic view of processing times people are experiencing.

Yea, hopefully they approve the OWP sooner rather than later so I can apply for a TRV. Yea, I'm thinking it should be okay. As long as I have my valid TRV and a valid open work permit, and the fact that I am travelling with my common law partner. Cool. Thanks @canuck78
