Applied for my residency in March. Not expecting it to be finalized until later in 2014....

March 2014, one of my good friends is getting married in Jamaica. Can I go? I have a work permit with expires next april, and intend on continuing working, so will apply to extend my work permit before it expires.

So coming back into Canada after the wedding, I will have a work permit to show, so will it be alright? I have left the country to visa my home country many times before and had no issues coming back in as I can show my current Work Permit.

However everyone keeps saying you can't leave the country while application is in process.... Can someone please confirm?

Thank you all! :)

Okay, I am guessing from your flag that you're Australian. If you're not, what I'm about to explain may not apply to you.

Here's the deal. You've applied Inland for Spousal sponsorship. It's not recommended you leave because if you're denied re-entry into Canada for any reason, your application is considered abandoned. You would have to start over again.

You're also visa exempt, have a valid PR application in process, and have a work permit. Chances of you being denied re-entry are fairly slim.

You need to decide if the risk is worth it to you.

Agreed, well put. Just to add however IF your work permit is NOT an open work permit you may wish to carry a letter from your employer stating that they are expecting you to return to work on such-and-such date. Again, assumptions have been made.

Am from New Zealand, but close ;) Our stars are red and Australia's are white with a big extra one :)

Thanks so much for your input guys. I will maybe get a letter from my employer as well as the work permit, etc. No, it's not an open work permit - its to a specific employer, but I may (hopefully) have a OWP by then.

Thanks!!!!

A related question -

What about a person from China, here with a study permit and temporary resident visa (TRV) already for 1 year, going home for 1 month, then coming back?

She is my step-daughter (19) and her mom with PR will sponsor her dependent daughter outland from Canada for PR. Plan to apply for the daughter's PR a week or two before the daughter goes back for 1 month vacation. Would this effect her re-entry into Canada ? Her TRV in passport allows multiple entries, but her PR application would be in process.

Should we have any concerns about applying right now?

Thanks

that's a different case, as you would be applying outland. Outland applicants are free to go in and out of Canada, they are not supposed to stay in Canada. Entry to Canada is never guaranteed, but if she has a multiple entry TRV, her PR application should not come into play.

How did mom get PR without including her daughter on the application?

My wife did include my step-daughter on her application.

We mistakenly put down "non-accompanying" since my step-daughter came here first to study under a TRV/study permit.

We did absolutely everything required (paid correct fees for dependents, did medicals, sent resume as requested, sent BOTH passports. They issued COPR only for my wife. No communication by the VO to check why we put "non-accompanying" - an obvious oversight on our part. We immediately returned the passports and COPR. You can imagine the grief this decision cost us - having 1 COPR in hand, but not the other. We sent back with a letter requesting the change to issue the 2nd COPR. They refused, said file was completed. The VO had even sent a form letter with the COPR which suggested that changes regarding dependents could be made, prior to landing. Senior members here also suggested it could be possible. Luckily they at least returned the passports promptly (in the midst of the strike I may add), so we are thankful for that and can move on. Now need to apply for daughter's PR separately by mom, immediately after she arrives. Of course we will need to pay additional fees ($640). This also will continue to cost us sky-high university international "differential" tuition fees until she gets her PR. I think a large part of Immigration is about the money for the government.

So anyhow, our daughter was included on mom's application, and at least she can be sponsored in the future. Just doesn't get COPR now. What a bummer.
