Except Quebec, in all other provinces, all programs from DLI listed institutions who have PGWP as "Yes" in the DLI list are eligible for PGWP. However, the Must follow the rules given below. If any course of any credential/award does not meet the requirements below, then they are Not elegible for PGWP.

Eligibility of PGWP

You have 180 days after your school issues your final marks to apply for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP).

To be eligible, your study permit must have been valid at some point during these 180 days.

You must also have:

  • completed a study program:
    • at a designated learning institution
    • that was at least 8 months long and
    • that led to a degree, diploma or certificate
  • maintained full-time status as a student in Canada during each semester of your study program (except your final semester, which can be part-time, or if you took a leave from studies)
  • graduated from a:
    • public post-secondary school, such as a college, trade/technical school, university, or CEGEP (in Quebec), or
    • private post-secondary school (in Quebec) that operates under the same rules as public schools in Quebec, or
    • private secondary or post-secondary school (in Quebec) that offers qualifying programs of 900 hours or longer, that leads to a diplôme d’études professionnelles (DEP) or an attestation de spécialisation professionnelle (ASP), or
    • Canadian private school that can award degrees under provincial law (for example, Associate, Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate degree) but only if you’re enrolled in a study program that leads to a degree as authorized by the province
You aren’t eligible for a PGWP if you:

  • already received a post-graduation work permit
  • studied English or French as a second language
  • took general interest or self-improvement courses
  • participated in the Government of Canada Awards Program funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC)
  • had funding from GAC
  • got the Equal Opportunity Scholarship, Canada-Chile
  • participated in the Canada-China Scholars Exchanges Program
  • participated in the Organization of American States Fellowships Program
  • completed the majority of a study program by distance learning (online courses, e-learning or correspondence)
  • completed a study program at a non-Canadian institution located in Canada

and what if we want to apply for another program (1+1)
The second program must be completed within 2 years of the first program be completed. In that case you will have 180 days after your second course is completed. Also, the second course must be more than 8 months in length.

Thank you for the info....you said 180 days 6 months.....I guess study permit is valid up to our college program end date and this 6 months is grace period for us to apply for PGWP or to extend study permit for another year .....is that right ?

What can we do in these 180 days ….can we work part/full time in this time ….also in the CIC website it says next program should commence in about maximum of 150 days ?

Yes and no. The 6 months is a grace period given so that you can apply for PGWP. If you are doing another course you will need to extend your study permit before your study permit expires. This means you may have to have an offer letter and apply for an extension before your current program ends.

To be clear,

You have 6 months to apply for PGWP

You do NOT have 6 months to apply for study permit extension.

You need to keep your status in Canada valid, if your study permit expires then you will have to shift your status as a visitor, doing this will void your implied status of your previous visa. While you can do a restoration of status, it is preferable that you either apply for an extension before your permit expires, as a study permit extension is easier to get, and generally the hassles are less.

It is mentioned that we are not eligible if we take "general interest or self-improvement courses". If I want to join general French language classes (different from the programme I am pursuing), can I do that? Will that course come under this category of "general interest or self-improvement courses"?

Levels of education in canada

These courses mentioned below can be done after 12th, most students from india opt for the diploma as after 2 years of education in diploma you get 3 year work permit.

Certificate<diploma<advanced diploma<bachelor's

The following courses can be done after obtaining bachelor's degree

College graduate certificate<Master's

After doing master's you can go for PHD

Hope this makes it clear.

You don't need valid Study permit to apply for PGWP. It says so in the link I have given.
