Hello everyone,

My apologie if this question has already been asked, I am new to the forum and I have tried to search without luck.

My wife and I are leaving in Australia. She is a Canadian citizen and we now want to relocate to Canada.

I am not sure on how immigration and visas work in Canada, and I am sorry if I ask stupid questions:

1) Is it better to apply for a spouse sponsor visa while away from Canada or in Canada?

2) I was reading that the process time for Spouse visa is about 12 months, is that correct? (in land application as well out of Canada application?)

3) Is it possible to get a Work Permit while the Spouse Application is in process? (here in Australia the spouse sponsor time is about the same, but while waiting for the visa to be completed, it is possible to work)

Many thanks for your help

Regards

Ok, I can partially respond to myself :

yes, it seems I can apply for a work permit while my sponsorship application is in process/progress...

the question is: would it work for both types of application (started in Canada and started outside Canada)? and how long would it take to get a work permit?

Thanks ALL!

1. You haven't stated your nationality. If you are Australian, it is a far better option for you to apply outland now.

2. Generally, outland is much faster. Sydney averages around 6 months.

3. Only if you apply inland. You must first come to Canada and then apply. It takes 4 months for the OWP to arrive.

where can you see the process time? is there somewhere in the immigration website?

We are currently in Australia, but I am Italian; would this change the processing time? is it a paper-based application or an online one?

4 months!?! wow that is a very long time!!! ano better option for a faster processing time???

Thanks heaps!

The average processing times that people talk about here on the forum come from other forum members. There are many spreadsheets to track timelines.

As an Italian, your app would most likely go to Rome, not Sydney. I believe Rome is closer to around 10 months average but I suggest you have a look the Rome thread to see.

There is no faster processing time for the OWP. Come to Canada, submit the PR/OWP app and receive the OWP about 4 months later.

You could look into the IEC program and see if you qualify.

Too old for that... I am 40 ;)

Many thanks for your suggestions... What if I get an employer who is willing to sponsor me? will it make it easier/faster?

In order to hire you, an employer must have a positive LMIA; it costs them $1000 just to apply, there are very strict requirements they have to meet and it takes months to process. Not easier or faster.

I would say that your best option is to apply outland now. You can continue working in Australia while the app is processed.
