Can a US Citizen fly to the US and back to Canada without PR card?

My wife just recently became a PR. We are still waiting for her card to be mailed, but had a pre-planned trip to Hawaii booked in a couple of weeks.

Can she still travel to the US and return without having the PR card? Our concern is that she wont be let on the plane back to Canada from Hawaii.

She does have Nexus as well if that makes a difference but I have seen some conflicting information online so wanted to confirm if this is possible.

General advice though for a US passport holder is to not make it obvious or in fact say anything to the airline checkin that they are a PR, just present their US passport.

Shouldn't be a problem. Normally she could just use her NEXUS card for boarding, But if she just became PR, likely her NEXUS information has not been updated yet. Hence I'd recommend using her US passport.
