I know it has long been permissible to travel across the land border to enter Canada in a private vehicle without a valid PR card by presenting a CoPR or record of landing.

But I've been hearing things may have changed during COVID restrictions.

An acquaintance told me that two different CBSA officers said she would not be able to enter without a valid PR card by private car at a land crossing.

I'm a US citizen and a Canadian PR, and I definitely still meet PR requirements (having lived in Canada since landing and travelled very little), but my PR card is expired. I have an urgent need to visit the US to deal with a family matter, however, so I was thinking of driving there by private car. But now I'm not sure I can return. I would prefer not to fly, as I am unvaccinated (like most people in Canada).

Does anyone have recent experience with this? Thanks in advance.

Hello Helen80
In a similar situation.. did you try that .I have an expired PR card but have not lost my status. Can I enter Canada with expired PR card to take my oath ceremony ?

Are you planning to enter Canada through a US/Canada land border? If so, the answer is yes, you can do that.

Is that you or your wife who want to enter through the land border?
Anyway, if she met her RO and has her COPR/expired PR card and valid passport, she can return to Canada via the land border.

Any recent experiences? I called Border Control and they mentioned it will be up to the discretion of the border agent at time of entry.
