Hello,

I am currently on a work permit in Canada, and my minor child is on a dependent visa/study permit.
My spouse is in a different country.
I need to travel outside Canada for one week. Can I leave my child in Canada (with a relative) when I am outside the country? Can a dependent stay in the country without the main visa holder?

Any pointers will be very helpful.
Thanks,
Ananya.

Yes you can leave your child temporarily. You should draw up papers giving your relative the right to make medical decision for your child while you are out of Canada.

Thanks for your reply. Is there any web page that calls this out explicitly? I tried searching but could not find anything.

This isn’t an immigration requirement but a responsible step if both parents are out of the country and they leave their child in the care of relatives. If your child had to go to the hospital family members can’t make medical decision for your child.

Yeah obviously immigration is not going to give parenting advice!
I was referring to the "can leave your child temporarily" part of it and asking if that was mentioned anywhere.
