Quick disclosure first: I work on a browser-based calling tool, so I have a commercial interest in this topic. Not linking it here — just sharing what I've learned, and mods, happy to take this down if it's not appropriate.
Something nobody warned me about: once you land, a surprising amount of admin back home can only be done by phone. Bank fraud lines, tax authorities, pension and insurance offices. None of them are on WhatsApp, and a lot of them won't accept email for anything involving your account.
A few things worth knowing:
What's been the hardest institution for people here to reach from Canada? Curious whether it's consistent by country.

A few things worth knowing:
- Check whether your home bank has a dedicated NRI/overseas desk with a direct number. It's usually different from the main line and far faster.
- Time your calls to their business hours, not yours. Most people burn two or three attempts learning this.
- Canadian carrier international rates are brutal, roughly $1.50–3.00/min to most countries. There are much cheaper options; I'm not going to pitch one in my first post here.
- Keep a written record of reference numbers from every call. Several institutions will only honour a request if you can quote the previous one.
