It may be different with different offices, but with us we had to inquire about what was taking so long several times before finding out we were "waiting in the queue for an interview date" - then later they gave us 4 weeks notice before the actual interview date.

It varies from one visa office to another. But for example the Singapore office, usually sends out the interview notice about 1 year in advance....
