Hey all, I'm looking into getting a puppy but I might not be getting her until after I get DM/my CoPR arrives. Do you think this would cause a problem when bringing her with me to land as a personal pet?

Or would they make me pay the customs/duties fees on her if everything is finalized after I receive DM/CoPR?

Your puppy is not your dependent so does not need to be listed on your COPR. So it doesn't matter when you get it. Not sure if tax/duties are required for pets, but if so the puppy would be counted with all your other personal belongings, vehicles, etc so would be at least duty-free when landing as a PR.

Just make sure all shots/vaccinations are up-to-date with supporting paperwork from vet, and you can import the dog per the usual process.

I was thinking more towards having to list her on the possessions form that you fill out with all thethings you are importing to Canada. I know she wouldn't be listed on my CoPR, just wondering if I would likely get slammed taxes on her purchase price since I would be getting her close to, or after my CoPR..

Yes, if you get the puppy too late to import her with you when you land, you will need to pay duties and taxes when you bring her. However if you stay in the US more than 48 hours, you will have an $800 exemption when you return which will help with your costs.

As long as when you do your actual PR landing the puppy is listed on B4 forms with your other goods, then would be duty free as well along with all your other stuff.
Really not sure how this works for pets though, or if they are even charged duty in the first place. There may be fees for the pet inspection process that will be charged regardless.

Have you gotten DM yet?

Ok. Trends say you should get PPR/DM next week...
Yeah I'm hoping thats the case. Though it does seem like its taking about 160 days now instead of the 140 days that it was the last few months. I think they're starting to get bogged down by the student visas and helping other VO's catch up by taking on lots of apps from them.

Looks like you finally got DM. Congratulations! I was thinking it would take another week or so for you since your bgc started a little late.

Yes! I got DM last week. So happy the whole ordeal is basically over. Although, whats funny is that I just got an opportunity to work for Microsoft but the job is in the States. Ha!

Have you sent out your PPR documents yet?

Just to update those who were curious, I finally landed. I sent out my PPR on the 6th, received the 7th, got my CoPR on the 14th and landed on the 16th.
