Hi guys, i'we lived in US for past 10 years and we will be driving to Vancouver in May, here where i live in Colorado we don't have any Canadian banks or branches at all. I don't want to carry cash, but was wondering if i can do cashiers check on my name and once i'll land i can go to Canadian bank and deposit it there. Is there any other reliable way of bringing money to Canada ?

Like opening TD bank account here via phone and than i can keep account open and just transfer it to new one in Canada?
Thanks

you can open a bank account with your COPR before landing. Scotia and TD have it

Yes, you can do this. I did a bank draft in CAD though. And you'll have the option of all the banks, rather than just Scotia or TD. TD is fine though.

All the banks offer new immigrant packages, so it would be nice for you to research and see what you like.

you can apply online. most banks have a section for new immigrants on their website.

All Canadian banks accept US bank checks and cashiers check. For a regular check, they usually take 10-15 days to clear it. For the Cashiers check it is little faster. There is no charge for depositing a check. However, do remember that if you are carrying a check and cash over 10K, you will have to declare it at the border crossing.

When I moved from US to Canada, I carried with me 3K cash and a check for 4K. This Kept the total value below 10K CAD.
