I hope someone can answer this one for me. I am a Canadian citizen who has been living in Korea for the past 12 years. Eight years ago I married a Korean woman and we are planning to move back to Canada permanently in May 2013. We have made an application for PR for my wife and are waiting for it to be processed. It's going through the Manila office so I'm expecting a 9 or 10 month wait for approval.
Over the 8 years we have been married here we have acquired the usual household things; fridge, stove, furniture, other assorted personal belongings and will be shipping these back to Canada when we depart in May. They will arrive in Canada about 6 weeks after we do. It is my understanding that a PR entering Canada for the first time can bring these sorts of goods into Canada tax free.
Here's the problem. My wife's PR application will probably not be approved until long after we have moved back to Canada and our belongings have arrived. She will enter the country as a visitor to wait out the PR approval process. What tax or customs duties will we be liable to pay on the goods we are shipping to Canada when we arrive in May? Thanks in advance for any help.
