Bringing goods after landing

I have landed as a PR earlier this year and I am planning to move permanently to Canada in the next two months.

I am planning to send several boxes through a courier that contain my belongings. We are talking about clothes, books, personal items and one bicycle. I assume the total value of all the goods except of the bicycle will be couple hundred dollars. Bicycle is worth around $1000. I have not completed "Goods to follow" form during landing. I would prefer to send the boxes now to my wife address.

Can I be charged duty tax on the goods that I bring ? Is there any special paperwork I need to prepare ?

I'm not certain on this but I have seen others post about it so the more experienced users will be able to help you I'm sure. I'm aware that you should contact the Canada Border Services Agency and they will assist you in what to do, I think you have to fill out paperwork about items that are following you that have value.

You may be lucky and they don't charge you tax ,if you do you may try and fight it , but you should have filled in the "Goods to follow" form and handed it in when you landed as a PR .

Not true. Landing 'to activate PR' and a later 'landing as a settler / to establish a residence' can (and often are) two separate occasions.

Please refer to this thread here:

http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/thread-for-outland-london-uk-applications-t49436.21870.html

....then the posting number 21881 towards the bottom of that page for details.

You would have to land again in Canada BEFORE the items arrived and tell them that you are now landing as a settler to establish a residence and have an itemised 'goods to follow' list. They will check this, make you sign the forms and stamp it. You must them present this list to the local CBSA customs depot where the goods will be held until cleared by them.
