Am I going to run into trouble getting on the flight or entering Canada on a one way ticket with a Permanent Residency Card? I'm from England and my mum lives in Canada, she sponsored me and got me this PR card. I didn't buy a return as I wasn't sure when exactly I'll be back as I plan to work over the summer ideally and I need to do 720 days to renew my visa which I haven't done yet. Will I be fine or should I buy a return now?

Thank you

PR grants you the right to live and work in Canada, which means no need to convince border control that you'll leave the country since you are not required to leave at all. You are a PR for life unless you do something to revoke your status and can stay in Canada for as long as you like. :) Just be mindful of your residency obligation (2 years in any 5 year period).

If you are in possession of a valid PR card, a one-way ticket will be perfectly acceptable.

Great thanks for the responses. I do indeed have a permanent residency card that expires in July 2021 so I've got time as I fly out early June. This has given me one less thing to worry about, cheers : )

Just remember you must meet the RO starting on your landing date.

Do you mean I just need to make sure I’m in the 5 year window? I haven’t done 730 days, my card expires June 2021, I’ve left it late but if I don’t leave the Canada when I land there on June 5th, I should still be able to do my 730 days right?

PR card validity date is not relevant , it is your initial landing date that is the basis for the initial 5 year window so you need to complete 2 years residency from that date. Given a June 2021 card date then possible to assume an initial PR landing around April/May 2016 so you seem border line to be able to meet the residency obligation and you may or may not be questioned entering June 5th. Once back you will need to stay put without leaving at all or applying for a new PR card through at least June 2021 or preferably slightly longer.

Note that after the initial 5 years the residency obligation is reassessed on each new entry into the country where need to have 2 years in the 5 years preceding each new entry

Ah this might be relevent as I may be royally screwed: So I checked my passport and I visited my mum on 31 May 2015 for a holiday but this was also when I got my Confirmation of Permanent Residence paper. On the paper it says "became PR on: May 31st 2015" but the expiry date on the paper says May 2nd 2023? If I am screwed that's okay, I got some wrong info so I can just buy a return ticket and treat it as a long holiday but what does the expiry date of May 2nd 2023 hold any significance to this?

Thanks

That is just the expiry date of your PR card. Not related to whether you meet the residency requirement. Looks like you got your card a few years into your residency requirement but before the 3 year mark so that you still qualified. So technically you've already not met your RO. Because of your PR card expiry date you are likely not going to get caught. You should be planning on remaining in Canada for 2 years straight if you don't get reported. Something you'll need to think about.

Ah, though the expiry on my card is June 17th 2021 so the May 2023 must be a different expiry date surely? Regardless that's fine, should I buy a flexible return ticket just to be on the safe side?

If they let me in on the 5th of June I'll spend a month or two there to see if I'll like it and if I do, I'll try and stay for the 2 years and if not I'll come back to the UK.

PR cards are usually issued for a bit over 5 years but if you didn't get the PR card right away it won't coincide with your landing date plus a few months. What is important is that you meet the 2 year out of 5 year from your landing date followed by 2 out of 5 years on any day after that initial 5 year period. In your case you will have to wait 2 years in Canada to become compliant again. You don't need a return ticket at the moment. The chances of you getting caught and reported are pretty low. Would spreak to your mom about this stuff.

Ah okay thanks. The whole 2 year out of 5 is still a little confusing for me. I suppose I landed in May 2015 and I've missed my chance to do two years out of the 5 since I'd only be able to do 1 year until the 5 year period ends in May 2020 if I were to leave now. But you're saying because my card expiry date is in June 2021 they shouldn't question my RO?

And no worries, I'll call my mum when she's awake and get some details off her.

If you get into Canada any PR can stay for 730 days and then become compliant with their RO. As long as you make it into Canada you are fine. Given that your PR cards expires in many years you are unlikely to be flagged.

Because your card is valid until 2021, you are not likely to be reported. If you are not reported, you can remain in Canada beyond the expiry of your PR card without issue to meet the RO.
