Hi there,

I am a 19 year old female who was born and currently lives in New Zealand. My mother was born in Canada and still has her Canadian citizenship (as far as I know) and I've always wanted to move to Canada to live. Now that I am out of the family home I've been seriously looking into applying for citizenship, however, the new laws which were passed in 2009 have confused me a bit as to whether or not I can apply for citizenship at this stage. I don't think I am currently a Canadian citizen as it is nowhere on my passport or birth certificate, but I'd always assumed that seeing as my mum was born and had grown up in Canada that I would just be able to apply and get dual citizenship. Could anyone please help me out here?? Any help will be much appreciated!

You are a Canadian citizen first generation born abroad. According to the 2009 law, this means that you are a citizen but you can not pass citizenship to your children if they are born outside Canada.

In order to get proof of your citizenship, you will need to apply for it, see here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof.asp
