Birth Certificate Copy NOT certified

hi all,

i forgot to certify my birth certificate, however, i have included the translation along with the sworn statement.
i sent my package 2 days ago, so i wouldn't hear anything back yet.

anyone has experienced this? will my package be returned or will they ask for the certified one?
should i now send the certified copy or wait for any reply from CIC?

Another thing is.. my police certificate was made at the end of May 2011. So it was almost 3 months ago.
If I wait for the returned package, it will have been more than 3 months since my police certificate was issued (however, it's still valid till November 2011).
Do you think I should renew it when I re-send the package?

please advise...

Only the translation needs to be certified. A plain photocopy of the original should be OK.

It should be OK, as long as the package is received before the PCC is 3 months old.

Does the sworn statement have to be a separate document or can it be a stamp with translator signature and date?

Whoops, sorry, I was wrong - here's what the instruction guide says (p.14):

Any document that is not in English or French must be accompanied by:
 the English or French translation; and
 an affidavit from the person who completed the translation; and
 a certified copy of the original document.

Note: An affidavit is a document on which the translator has sworn, in the presence of a commissioner authorized to administer oaths in the country in which the translator is living, that the contents of their translation are a true translation and representation of the contents of the original document. Translations by family members are not acceptable.

So -
1) Yes, the original birth certificate must be a certified copy
2) Yes, the affidavit is usually a separate document, not just a stamp on the translation...

It is possible that they return the package, it is possible that they simply request the certified copy.

If you want to be on the safe side and it's not too difficult, you might want to get a new PCC.

Confusingly, the current (07/2011) checklist (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/forms/IMM5610E.PDF) says:

"Do not send originals unless otherwise stated. An English or French translation is required for documents in any other language, accompanied by an affidavit from the person who completed the translation."

(I sent German police certificates—originals—with certified translations, but no certified copies. Buffalo hasn't complained yet...)

So, were you asked to submit CERTIFIED copy of your birth certificate?
