Hi, new here so please bear with me!

I am interested in moving to Canada with my family (wife and child) but would like some advice on the best way to approach this. From the reading I have done it would either be me with a job offer or my wife as a self-employed person.

I am serving military with experience in a range of fields including (in order of experience): training design, delivery, evaluation, audit and analysis; HR management and welfare support (including leading teams of over 100); media/public relations, event management. The problem I have is that I am in my 40s with no experience of working in Canada (I have worked with Canadians, but outside of Canada) and my relatives in Canada are not immediate family so don't count for points for express entry. I also think it is hard to get a job offer without being in the country to make good applications (unless I'm wrong there).

My wife is a craftsperson (knitter and instructor) under the NOC code 5244, so I think she would qualify under the Self-Employed Person program, as she has her own business and many years of experience. I hear that this is a slow route for immigration, though, and has a high failure rate.

So I am really after some advice on which line to spend my time and effort pursuing as we are both working and time is precious!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Start by calculating how many points you have under Express Entry. Right now you need around 470 points to be selected from the pool and your age is certainly going to work against you unfortunately. If you have around the right number of points, this will be an option.

If you are short on points to qualify for Express Entry directly, you will need to research the Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP). Each has its own requirements to qualify.

Self-employment is likely not a realistic path unless your wife can demonstrate that she is executing her craft on a world-class level. Yes - this stream takes a long time and has a high failure rate.

Thank you for the response. I don't have enough points under the express entry scheme, so I will have to take a good look at the PNPs to see if that helps. It is not unreasonable for my wife to demonstrate that she is on a world-class level, but obviously that could be subjective for the craft and would certainly take time.

I appreciate the assistance, thank you.
