Background check vs FBI History? What’s the difference?

I’ve been seeing a lot of comments about when applications reach the background check phase. I was under the impression that the FBI History (PCC) that we submitted WAS the background check. Are they two different things? If so, what’s the background check?

Yes, they are two different things.

'Background checks' are the sort of 'security' checks they run against you, your PA, the family and 'associates' of the family to check for international crime or terror related connections. The sort of thing that your NSA etc. tracks.

Think about what you’re asking. Of course they’re two different things. Canada wouldn’t allow foreign nationals to come settle here permenantly after a five second glance over a police certificate.

Thank you for explaining the difference as I was uncertain. I had thought about what I was asking and remained uncertain which was why I asked here. What I am trying to better understand is what is involved in the background check. What exactly is looked into? (ie past employers called? Family members contacted? etc). I would love to better understand what that part of the process looks like. I appreciate in advance you sharing your knowledge on the subject!
