Bach. in Comp -> 5 yrs works exp IT -> Master in Bus -> Query on career change

Hi people,

I´m new here, and I am amazed at the amount of info available in this forum. Congrats to all the contributors!

I have a question regarding work experience. My situation is as follows:

Bachelors in Computer Science followed by 5 years full time working in IT, then a Masters degree in Business Admin. Right now Im unemployed, but am aiming for a job NOT in IT. Let´s say I get employed in 2 weeks as a Purchaser in a company and then I apply in January for FSW.

My question is:

Since I will be starting a new career (supposedly in Purchasing) and I will not have any previous experience on this profession by January i.e. only 2 months, and if I list Purchasing as the intended profession in Canada, does this mean that the 5 yrs of IT experience won´t give me any points since I have kind of ¨abandoned¨ this job?

You should have at least 01 year experience in ur intended occupation, besides u will get ur points for experience for the same..

I am not that sure abt the new system though.

Well 5 years in IT I think it´s enough. It´s not exciting anymore. I would like to do sth in Purchasing, Operations, or any other business fields except for IT.

Are you so into IT yourself?

All applicants must meet the following minimal requirements to apply as a skilled worker:

You must have at least one year of continuous full-time, paid work experience or the equivalent in part-time continuous employment
You must have had this experience within the last 10 years
Your work experience must be Skill Type 0 (managerial occupations) or Skill Level A (professional occupations) or B (technical occupations and skilled trades) on the Canadian National Occupation Classification (NOC)

It does not say 1 year experience in the INTENDED occupation.

So, are you just assuming or you know it for a fact?

There have been some changes in FSW lately, thats wat I posted earlier. The MI2&3 streams needed us to apply under one of 29 occupations nominated by HRSDC.

If anyone having one year exp in skill type 0, A, B can apply now, its a good sign. And u my friend don't need to wait for an year to get exp, its better to apply on behalf of ur already acquired exp of IT, check it, which is its skill level.

In the meanwhile, get exp in whatever field u want and u will be free to join the occupation of ur interest in CA, provided u have got skills for that.

Yeah it seems the career change does not matter that much. So it´s not a concern anymore. There are other things to worry about such as taking the IELTS, gathering the docs, and doing the credentials assessment...

Hey Shaddy,

I haven´t taken the IELTS exam yet. My interest on Canada is recent, and only lately I discovered I have to take that exam. Having completed both the bachelors and masters degree in English, I thought the language requirement would be waived, which is certainly not the case.
