Hello,

On November 4, 2011, CIC announced a temporary pause on all new sponsorship applications for the parents and grandparents category. With the introduction of this pause, CIC implemented an Authorized Period of Extended Stay for up to two years for applicants seeking to extend their visit with their child or grandchild who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

This Authorized Period of Extended Stay allows visitors to stay for a period of up to two years.

Has anyone have any experience (success) in this application?

Thank you in advance for all the inputs.

This is the super visa. Yes - people here have had success with the super visa. Look for threads with "super visa" in the title.

Actually it is not an a super visa - yes it's similar to it, but this is a reason for an extension of stay for a parent who is already in Canada, the cic does not give a 10-year multiple entry visa to the one who applies for the extension of stay based on Authorized Period of Extended Stay.

If a parent is on a super visa they do not need to extend their stay for two years from their arrival day.

Here is the link to it - Guide 5551 - Applying to Change Conditions or Extend Your Stay in Canada

Though the requirements are the same as super visa.....

What must I do to obtain an Extended Stay?

In order to obtain an Authorized Period of Extended Stay Visa, you need to provide:

• evidence of the parent or grandparent relationship to the Canadian citizen or permanent resident you wish to visit (e.g. birth certificate, baptismal certificate or other official documents naming you as parent),
• a letter of invitation from your child or grandchild which includes arrangements for care and support,
• proof from your child or grandchild that he meets the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO)
• proof of that you have private medical insurance valid for a minimum of one year from a Canadian insurance company and that:
- covers health care, hospitalization and repatriation,
- provides a minimum coverage of $100 000, and
- is valid for each entry to Canada and be available for review by a port of entry officer.

We have had a few clients who were able to extend their stay here in Canada that way, while some were declined. It's very important to provide all that they require and to show why the person would go back after their visit - ties to their home country!

Well, it's quite difficult for a single parent to provide the reason for being back... that's why I guess they implemented the super visa.

Hi Suin,

My mom came here before the super visa was announced and when her 6-month stay was to be expired, I applied (to Vegreville, AB) for 2 year extension through super visa, and they extended her stay for 2 years and 2 months. As a reason for extension, I stated in the application that I have applied to sponsor her for PR, and I would like her to stay in Canada with me while her PR application is being processed.

Thank you for your reply. When you applied for that extension did you submit all the required proofs like medical insurance and LICO?

You should apply at least one month before the expiry date of your mother's visitor record. And yes, I showed LICO and proof of insurance purchase. They approved the application, sent her the extension visitor record and asked my mom to undergo medical exam within 90 days. Yes, they asked for medical exam after giving her the extension.

Hope you do not mind me asking... When did you apply for your Mom's extension of stay?

Thank you for you reply. In our situation they extended my Mothers stay for 2 years in 2011 without any proof of requirements (the super visa ones), now we are planning to extend her stay using Parents Authorized Period of Extended Stay sending all the required proof for super visa application. Do you think it can work out?

You know, I can't say that they extended my mom's stay for two years with super visa even though I sent all the requirements. It is possible that they extended it for two years just as a regular visitor record. It doesn't say super visa any where on the extension visitor record. So maybe the insurance that I purchased was useless for the visa extension application. Next time, I would still send in the super visa requirements just to increase the chances of extension for another 2 years.
