Usually stays. But if you get two ghost updates and you've missed them, and log back in to see them, you'll only see 1 ghost update. Atleast thats how it was for me.

No one knows for sure, but as @a6prasad said yes if you get two and login in after you got two you will only see one.

But if there was only one ghost update I believe it stays until you login. I would say it stays at least for a day.
