Hi there!

I'm a naturalized Canadian citizen from Sri Lanka, currently living in BC. I am planning to sponsor my wife, who is living in Sri Lanka, via the Family Class sponsorship application.

I am going through the document checklist, which states that the principal applicant, which is my wife in this case, must provide "birth certificates or baptismal certificates for yourself (and all your dependents, if applicable - whether they are accompanying you to Canada or not". I understand that she needs to submit her birth certificate, but does she also need to submit MY birth certificate? Technically for form IMM0008, I had to list myself as a dependent as I'm her spouse, but my understanding is that only she needs to submit her birth certificate. If we had children they would need them as well, but not me right?

Thank you so much for any support!

As sponsor you should not be on the imm0008 as dependent. If you read carefully there, it says not to include those who are already prs or citizens.

Therefore: you do not need birth certificate unless the sponsor docs require it. (Which it doesn't as far as I recall)

Hm...so imm0008 does note that "you must include your spouse or common-law partner, if applicable, and all your dependent children, and those of your spouse or common-law partner, who are not already permanent residents or citizens of Canada".

You are right though, the sponsor docs do not require it according to the checklist. This is why I was confused, because then I'm a dependent, but it would make no sense for me to submit my birth certificate as i'm already a canadian citizen. Plus of course it's not on the checklist. Have you or anyone else been in this situation and NOT submitted a birth certificate as a sponsor?

Yes, did not submit birth certificate.

And repeat, to emphasize, you do not go on imm0008 as sponsor because already a citizen.

Thank you for your replies!

Ok so it sounds like I do NOT need to submit my birth certificate, which is great.

Hm...but i've already added myself as a dependent and we have both already signed the form...this won't be an issue right? I know someone else that did this and their application went through successfully.

But you are not the dependant. You are the sponsor.

The either redo it properly or take your chances. Up to you.
