Applying inland vs. outland??

Hi there,
I am an American citizen, my husband is a Canadian citizen. We are gearing up to apply for sponsorship any day now. What is the difference between applying inland and outland (aside from where the application goes to)? Which processing time is faster and is there a higher approval rate for one or the other?

Outland (even if the applicant is IN Canada, as a visitor) is substantially faster. Outand is ~ 8-10 months, while Inland is well over 2 years...and the applicant is advised NOT to leave Canada at any time during the process if the choose the Inland application.

The approval/refusal criteria is exactly the same.

Thank you. If I apply outland and apply for a visitation extension to stay with my husband while our PR application is processing what are the chances of it being approved? Also will I be able to leave and re-enter while the PR application is in process or is it advised not to do that?

IMO, the chances of an approved visitor extension are very good for you. Most Americans find little difficulty in doing this, especially if the sponsor has been approved before the request is made.


An Outland applicant has more freedom to leave Canada, because if re-entry is denied, for whatever reason, the application continues to be processed. An Inland applicant that leaves and is refused re-entry, has their application cancelled, because they are required to be IN Canada for the duration of the process.

If you leave Canada before the 6 months you don't have to apply for a visitors visa extension. Its not that common but it does happen. If the Cbsa is a jerk and wants to refuse you back into Canada he can. If he has reasons to think you won't leave if you don't get excepted, if he thinks you are living here or thinks you may be working.

My husband is a Brit and we have always had a return ticket even if we didn't use it to return, also always carried our papers of SA when we left Canada.

With a PR app in process and proof that you can support your stay, the chances of being refused entry are very low.
