Applying for Study Permit While Waiting For PR

Hi,

I am a US citizen, my husband is a Canadian citizen and is sponsoring me for a PR. We plan to apply inland for the PR along with an Open Work Permit. I was accepted into a university program starting this fall. The university told me that I would also need to apply for a study permit before classes begin. The person I spoke with at the university told me to apply at the border for the study permit one month prior to classes starting. She said this would work as long as I told them I was applying under "duel intent" and if I acknowledged that I would leave the country if denied the PR status after my studies are complete.

Has anyone had issues with this or tied this?

Thanks!

Apply outland (not inland). You could have PR in as little as four months that way (possibly even less). International student tuition is substantially more expensive than domestic student tuition. You want to pick the path that gets you PR the fastest.

Yes - you can apply for a study permit at the border.

I was told that applying Outland typically takes a year. Is this not accurate? Could I apply Outland and still visit Canada? Or cannot you not enter while waiting for a PR if applying Outland?

The university told me that I could get domestic tuition since my husband is a Canadian citizen.

Not accurate. Move over to the Family Sponsorship section of the forum and find the threads discussing Americans being sponsored. We've had people get PR in as little as 70 days. Yes - you can certainly apply outland while in Canada. That's what my American husband did. Most Americans on this forum have applied outland regardless of whether they were in or outside of Canada.
