My wife is a Canadian PR holder and was currently transferred to work in the Toronto (from US) branch starting August 2023. I am working in the US and planning to move to Canada to stay with wife in the coming future. I am currently on a tourist visa and visit her every month

I have a couple of questions -
1. For proof of relationship, can we provide rental agreements both in the US and Canada that show that both of our names are included on the agreement or does the IRCC only care about lease agreements in Canada?

2. Since my wife was not in Canada for the previous years, she has not filed taxes since she wasn't a resident for tax purposes. Do we need to write an explanation letter to justify why she does not have a tax filing documents?

3. Given that I generally drive to Toronto, the immigration offices at the land border generally do not stamp the passport. How do I provide proof that I have been visiting her every month.

1. You can provide any documents you believe will support your relationship. It does not matter what country they are from. A rental agreement that shows you lived together before submitting the application is always good to provide.

2. Since she is only a PR and not established in Canada, She should provide Canadian pay stubs and a letter from her Canadian employer (The letter from her employer is a requirement) I would also provide a letter explaining the situation as to why she can't provide the required CRA Statement of income.

3. Photos and receipts will be enough to prove trips.

Understood. Thanks for your response.

Another question of mine is that the spousal sponsorship requires -
  • Documents proving that you are recognized as common-law partners of each other, such as employment or insurance benefits;
Q1. What are employment benefits in this case?
Q2. Do insurance benefits include healthcare insurance(such as medical, dental, vision, etc) or just life insurance is enough?
