Hey, I'm hoping to come to university in Canada next September. I was wondering if I can apply for a permanent residency whilst doing this, and how long this will take. As my mother wants to come over too, but Im not sure how easy it will be for her to obtain a PR. So was planning on getting a family sponsorship once I obtain a permanent residency, would this work. Thanks x

Join the Canadian Experience Class section or International Students section of this forum for discussions on obtaining PR for students. In most cases you will have to first finish your studies in Canada and then obtain a year of work experience in Canada before you will qualify to apply for PR.

You mother could apply to immigrate independently if she qualifies. You can find more information about the various programs available here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/apply.asp

You may also be able to sponsor your mother for PR after you become a PR yourself. CIC is not accepting parent sponsorship applications at this time. So you will have to wait until early next year (when the program reopens again) to find out what the new requirements are.
