I moved to Canada in June ad am here on a visa on arrival (UK passport holder). My PR application is in process but unlikely to be complete before my visa expires so I'll need to get an extension (and hopefully a Visitor Record so I can get a Canadian driver's licence).

The average processing times for London and Abu Dhabi (where I moved from) are 11 days whereas it's 109 days when applied from within Canada.

Does anyone know if I can apply through London or will it cause problems that although my passport may be there, it will show that I am physically still in Canada? TIA

As long as you comply with ALL the requirements that CIC has for the application then Canada doesn't really care where you physically are.

OK, that shouldn't be a problem. Thank you for your reply.

At what stage is your PR application and under what class it it? If you say are under a spousal route then extensions are typically granted without any issues. Extensions while you waiting for work type related PR schemes can be less of a guarantee. CIC will want to see how you will maintain yourself without resorting to illegal working until the PR comes through so you best show some solid funds. What are you doing for your medical insurance as that too has length of stay clauses. Also the London/Abu Dhabi processing times you refer too are those for visitor visa applications? You can't really compare in country extensions of status to visa issuance overseas.

Family sponsorship (Canadian husband sponsoring us) and we're at the "In Process" stage.

Husband works and solid joint bank account, husband owns our property. Private medical insurance paid by husband's company and us until PR granted and we can get provincial health care.

Yes, 11 days is the processing time for visit visa extensions in both London and Abu Dhabi. Extension processing times in Canada are 109 for paper application and 126 days for online application. Hence I was wondering if I could apply through London for an extension to my visit visa. (I've confused myself now, why would one want to apply for a visa extension if they're outside of Canada?)
I just want to make sure I'm not staying in Canada without any kind of visa.

Thanks!
