Hello all,

I'm a student in the US right now on j-1 visa. I'm from Iraq and my visa/program will end soon. I want to apply for asylum in Canada cuz my chances to get asylum in the US are very weak now.

My questions: Can I apply for asylum on the point of entry in the US-Canadian border? And does it matters if my visa expires? Would I expect to be held/questioned by the US checkpoint or they would allow me to go to the Canadian side?

PS. I came to learn that there is exceptions from the third safe country agreement for the people from some countries and Iraq is one of them.

i'm not advising you to go by yourself at the canadian border because i know couple of friend
who got arrested by seeking asylum there and sent them back to us and you don't want to know the rest of
their adventure i guess!
the best way to do so is to contact a canadian lawyer and explain him your story then he will
send you some forms to fill so you will be in good hands and don't forget this is not a 100% guaranty
but you could make arrangement with your lawyer to get you through the procession as soon as you landed

or if you are not sure just get married to american woman (just my opinion! )

good luck friend
