Apply Citizenship now or waiting

Hello all,

I became PR on Oct 2012. I am wondering if I apply citizenship early while I spent time in Canada almost 1,460 days and also 85 days absent in Canada (because I visited my home country for 85 days i.e, Jan 2015 to April 2015). Do I need to apply and submit my citizenship on immigration website or waiting get an official letter from immigration?

Not sure what this question is really about. If you became a PR in October 2012, and have been outside Canada 85 days since then, there is no way you will qualify for citizenship (under current rules) until some time in 2017

Well, if you landed before Oct 6, 2012 and you were outside Canada absolutely no more than 85 days, you will meet the minimum requirement just before the New Year, but practically speaking you will not even be qualified until the New Year and then you should wait for at least a couple weeks beyond that to apply.

Applying one day early will result in being denied. Period.

No idea what letter from immigration you are referring to. There is no communication from the government informing PRs if or when they are qualified for citizenship. There is no invitation to apply for citizenship.

And again, make sure to have at least ten days or two weeks, or in my view even more, above the minimum requirement before applying for citizenship.

Current minimum is 1460 days.

By sometime in 2017 it is likely the minimum will be reduced to 1095 days. (See discussions about proposed legislation to change requirements; Bill C-6, which has already been passed by the House of Commons and is before the Senate.)

Thank you for your reply dpenabill. I knew that. Okay so I will apply citizenship on Jan 2017 but my PR expired will be on Dec 2017. After applied citizenship, can I travel to my home country this December or January while I have valid PR and my country ID card? Is there issues or problem for PR status or citizenship processing?

It is not advisable to travel after applying for Citizenship as you might not meet the "Intent to reside" clause. But if it is really necessary to go and if you will be able to come back within couple of weeks then I don't see any problems.

You can travel. But it is not advisable to make a very long trip or take any actions abroad that might suggest an intention to move out of Canada after becoming a citizen.

Does this problem for Citizenship processing or possible interview, that I travel outside of Canada twice (2015 - 85 days absent and Dec 2016 - 42 days absent in Canada?

You can travel. But it is not advisable to make a very long trip or take any actions abroad that might suggest an intention to move out of Canada after becoming a citizen.

That should be fine. Your time outside Canada is not that much for a 4 year period so it should not cause much problems.
