Dear Satya,

I am happy that you are ready to help new guys.

Can you please share how do we get good accommodation from india that is fair & accessible to all the facilities ?

Please share link if possible.

Regards
Mayank

I find craigslist the best site across Canada for accommodation and loads of other things as well.
These are the links to the Vancouver and Toronto areas, but there are sites like this for all over Canada.

http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/
http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/

My husband found his lovely little bachelor basement suite on there when he first went to Canada and later I found our beautiful house rental there, so it has been a winner for us.

Not only that, but it is a super resource for furniture and things that you might need in Canada and LOTS OF STUFF INEXPENSIVE OR EVEN FREE!

I have just bought a lovely computer desk in perfect condition from someone down the road who did not need it any more (it is glass and now they have children it is not suitable for them) for $80. It would have cost at least $200 new and it is perfect.

There isn't anything that you cannot find on craigslist!
It advertises yard sales, cars, accommodation, pets, furniture, garden things, toys, wood for stoves, electrical goods, clothes.........EVERYTHING!

As you can see, I am a big fan.

For accommodation, I would recommend a different strategy than the one suggested, though.
I would book into a hotel/motel in your preferred area or nearby for the first week you arrive in Canada. I know this seems expensive, but I believe it is better than getting involved in a rental scam, which has happened to many people. Some unscrupulous landlords exploit immigrants who are abroad and get you to send them a deposit and then you never see them again.

As soon as you get to Canada, get internet access and a cellphone and get searching on craigslist. Many properties go very fast on these sites and so you need to get to see them asap and give a deposit straight away to secure it. I am confident that, like my husband, you will easily find somewhere very suitable within a week if you watch craigslist carefully and telephone and go to view rentals that sound good as soon as they are advertised. Speed is the key!

As for tenancy agreements, there is a standard one which many landlords use because it is suggested by the government and is legally correct.
It is here;

http://www.rto.gov.bc.ca/content/formsfees/default.aspx#start

The Residential Tenancy Agreement is what you need to look at to see what the rules are as standard. Damage deposit should be no more than half a month's rent, for instance.

Also, take copies of the Condition Inspection Report (which is number 3 of the documents available on this page) with you when you go to view any potential rental so that you can do the property check with the landlord right there and then if you like the place.

I hope this has helped anyone who is hoping to rent when they get to Canada initially.

I can vouch for this method as successful and without problems as we have used it ourselves with great success. ;D

hi. my status is same with u. long time on "RBVO"

one question:
u email to this address"buffalo-im-enquiry @ international.gc.ca"??
and i applied the immigration via lawyer,i can email visa office myself or must via lawyer?

thanks.

I sent the email to this email address:
buffalo-im-enquiry@international.gc.ca
I applied by myself. I think when you fill up the forms in the first step you give them an email address for future communications and they only recognize it as your address. Usually if you have a representative, you give them his/her address not yours.

An another thing, for sure it is better for your baby to be born in Canada so she/he will be Canadian and and citizenship won't be granted. And also for me it took 3 months after landing to receive the health card in Canada. So to be covered under Canadian insurance for giving birth you should consider landing here at least 3 months in advance. I am not sure after landing and without health card within those 3 months are you still covered or not. It is better to ask someone cos I'm not so sure what are the rules.

:) You know Helen, my wife and I have been living separate for a long time now and we had a plan that as soon as the PR visa would arrive, we would've moved together to Canada... but the wait is killing us! I am so glad that you went to your husband and had a great time with him... similarly, my wife is with me now a days (though for only 2 months :() and we are enjoying our stay together... but as this time is running out, we are praying more and more that we get the PR asap but to no avail! :( Now, I have made up my mind to forget Canada for a while and enjoy the present time and devise alternative methods for us being together :)

Thanks a lot for being an encouragement always! I pray you get your visa asap and join your husband forever :)

Ammaar

Amaar, you are a gentleman, as always and I thank you very much for your kind words.

I am deeply anti-racist and although I meet it amongst people of all colours in everyday life, I am always appalled at it. Race and creed differences should never prevent people from knowing and respecting one another as individuals and that is what is nice about this forum.

I am so very pleased to hear that you are able to spend some time with your dear wife and I celebrate your happiness. I know that there is nothing more in the world that I want than to be with my husband and not have to leave him ever again and I will certainly feel your sadness when I hear that your time together has come to an end for now, but I truly hope for a permanent reunion to come for us all very soon.

This process for those like us especially is a testing time but one of the positive things to come from this is that we can take comfort in the fact that we are so lucky to enjoy such a deep and true love with our partners that even miles of separation, huge stress and months apart cannot destroy it.

That is something really miraculous and a gift to be truly thankful for. :)
Bureaucracy and paperwork may keep us apart but it cannot dampen the love we have and that will get us through this together.

i wish all wives meet their husband and all husbands meet their wives , stay together n live happily forever. :)

Guys,
I don't know if you've noticed that not all Buffalo application lines on the spreadsheet are updated to 'In Process' even though they have received request for medicals. (or maybe that is an invalid assumption on my part that they would be InProcess on eCas if they have received request for Medicals).
For ex.
Punter 1122 Buffalo 14-Sep-2010 15-Feb-2011 16-Jul-2011 Received By VO 26-Mar-2011
GOHerd 631 Buffalo 22-Sep-2010 24-Jan-2011 21-Jul-2011 Received by VO 26-Mar-2011

Its touching knowing what people are going thru via this awesome forum.
The good thing that will come out from this separation is that it will strengthen the love of those that are separated now.
We should also learn to appreciate our wives/husbands as we live everyday.
My love to everyone who is separated from their spouse. I sincerely wish you speedy processing.
Best wishes to you all.

That is true. People have to wait for 3 months to get health card in ontario.

My status went into "In process" in 20-Jul-2011 and medical was done in 29-07-2011. The moderator forgot to update my status.

Guys - Yesterday I decided to send an email to Buffalo. I'm already in Canada, my company is sponsoring me to get my Permanent Residency and I wanted to check whether I'd have to renew my work permit before the PR application is processed. Here's their reply:

"Your application is in process. We are unable to provide a date when the processing of your application will be complete.

Regards,

Canadian Consulate General Buffalo

Immigration Section"

I applied on Dec. 24, 2010, and got my PER March 9, 2011. So I guess all 2010 applications should already be in process :)
