It is unfortunate that many will discover this unpleasant truth after they arrive in Canada.

I was at the Working Abroad Expo in London last weekend and I approach this Construction Company (PCL) since they were advertising for people with Project Management Experience.

As I approached the guy, he immediately put his hand behind his back. A clear indication that he was not willing to shake my hand or collect a CV from me. Nevertheless, I went on to present my case to him and before I had said two sentences, he informed me that the project they were advertising for was just at the inception stages and they won't be requiring people in the skilled trades till later. Just looking at me, he had concluded that I would only be fit for the skilled trades!

I persisted to tell him that I was an Architect and a Certified Project Manager and not a tradesman but he just showed clearly through his comments that he wasn't interested in furthering the discussion and not even look at my CV.

I decided to step back and observe and I noted that he hardly spent any time talking to ethnic minorities but spent loads of time shaking hands with caucasians and having lenghthy talks with them including collecting their CVs.

I just prayed that this won't be the general experience when we get to Canada.

Not every caucasian has this attitude because I have worked with and have befriended many but people should be prepared for this type of reaction. As much as governments speak against racism, there are still many individuals that thrive on it.

Long story but I'm compelled to share it.

What is the global population ratio of all the races again?
What constitutes the actual minority nowadays?
What compelled Canada and some other nations to seek immigrant population from various "other races"?
In what way has immigration changed the demographics of Canada and other nations in the west?
And what does it all portend for the future?
Food for thought!

Hi, thanks for sharing your story.

Alas, racism and prejudice exist pretty much everywhere, it is only the extent and the severity which differ!

For our point of view we didn't consider being caucasion would serve as any particular advantage. However, being a native English speaker and having a permanent residents visa in a profession which is not currently on the FSW1 list (since my spouse is PA) I had thought may give me a competitive advantage over other software developer immigrants looking for work.

Well I will be diving into the Canadian job market in a few months' time, so I will report back here with my findings when I do!

Unfortunate experience for you, but you will find that some people do want employees of a certain race, for example in Richmond, BC I've been on site to companies that have entirely Chinese staff. I think it's more "culturism" than racism per se - people like working with others of a similar culture and assume if someone is of a different race, they have a different culture too. I'm not saying it's acceptable at all, the guy sounds like an ass, but my point is that there's probably more to it than "this guy hates X race". I could be wrong of course.

There are so many immigrants over here in Canada that it really becomes a non-issue anyway. When you get immigrants hiring immigrants the problem pretty much disappears. I'm sure your skills will be warmly welcomed here.

Yes Cam, I agree. 'Killed' immigrants would have a very hard time finding a job, I'm pretty sure Zombies aren't all that 'in demand' at the moment. ;) ;D ;D

You made me laugh Wendy :P :) ;)
I see plenty of Zombies in my neck of the woods, these unfortunate folks are part of the 10% unemployment rate...
