Yes Mari, we will hopefully hear about our PERS together, God willing. By the way, while my family is used to living in a house, my wife and I were thinking of an apartment as well. Who wants the headache of a house/townhouse, besides the shoveling of the snow, there is the heating bill to worry about. My only concern is, spacious apartments are somewhat pricy... Could you possibly suggest some good areas where one can get a nice apartment and be near good schools? What do you think of the Markham area?

Although CIO was on steroids today, covering almost four "application received" calender days, I don't think our time will come before the New Years... but I would certainly be grateful for a present from Santa :)

Happy Holidays to you Mari,
Cam :)

sure, It really depends on your budget and also the most important thing the area you find a job.
otherwise everywhere you can find good school, Downtown Toronto is expensive and i think is more suitable for bachelor and busy life style. Markham is a good area and there are many similar areas that you can find condominium or rentals with good facilities to live.

I also believe house is a big headache specially when you are new in an area and you have many new things around. for the first year I rented a condo in Mississauga which is a part of GTA (west of downtown Toronto), you can reach downtown in 30-45 min from highway. Many companies have their office in Mississauga so there is a good chance to find job here. The price is also lower than down town and the area is more quiet too.
I suggest renting an apartment for the first year and you will have time to know the area and get settled down. The 2nd year you can buy your own apartment easily.

one of the important things new people should know before landing is that, if you do not have any credit history here in Canada it is not easy to rent a place. most of the owners want to check your credit history first and then sign the renting papers and definitely new people don't have any credit history in Canada thus landlords ask for a cosigner. you should have a very close person who accept to cosign for you in that case!!

a good website that can help to see the price range for renting or buying a place is mls.ca
If you need any specific info i would be more than happy to help.

Guys, the following is a line from a recent interview with the Canadian Immigration minister, Kenney

"We also have launched consultations on further changes to the points grid for the skilled worker program, which we hope will further improve economic outcomes for newcomers."

This is to be annouced next year and it means the points system will be changed. I suspect the qualifying 67 points will be increased or something more drastic.

I point this out to encourage any one whose files have been returned or if you know someone waiting till next year to try to put in their applications this year. it may become even tougher to qualify next year.

Please let evryone know.
