Wayne, come on, you say you love Indian food and why would you settle down for a tea?

You and your wify are invited for repeated Indian dinners at our place, wherever we are in Canada :)

Disclaimer: I'm not a great cook, but i can cook some awesome dinners :P :P

Thanks,

Indira Prabhakaran.

Ah sorry for the confusion. In UK "tea" = "evening meal". Or at least in some parts! We also use "dinner" for evening meal.

Anyway thanks for the invite! :) Maybe I could also cook you one of my curries? (Disclaimer: I make very, very hot curries ;)).

Indira,

For driving. My recommendation. Get a letter from your local RTO saying your license # and year of experience and also a attested copy of your license to prove it is original.

If you show this letter to local lisencing office they will let you take G road test licese(which is the latest you can go)(and also you need to have more than 2 year experience) but if you dont have the letter some ministry office will accept your indian driving licese and some don't. So letter is important.

You can get a decent used car for around $10000, which will easily go for few years.

Insurance is highly based on your age , experience and car model and year. In this case you dont have experience so you wil probably looking around $250 for insurance and Fuel atleat $100. So if you want a car it will atleast cost you 350 for a month but you will have the comfort as you have a small kid.

Thanks,

Pradeep

Thanks Pradeep :) Both of us will try to get that letter from the RTO 8)

350$ sounds good. Car would certainly make our life easier there, at-least after the first 3 months may be.

By any chance you know the school hours for a kid of 6 years? He will be in Grade 1 there. I am trying to check the necessity for the day care now!

Thanks,

Indira Prabhakaran.

Hey folks,

My research on cost of living in Toronto is something as below:-

Monthly Rent
$850 to $1100 for a one or two bedroom apartment

Transportation
$90 to $180 This amount is for public transportation for the wife or the person who doesn't
drive, and it depends on where you go, one city or GTA.

Gas (Fuel)
$200 to $300 Depends on your usage

Home Parking
$40 to $50 Outdoor parking is cheaper

Other Parking
$10 to $30 You some time need to park in a paid parking inside the city

Car Insurance
$183 to $300 Depends on the coverage and the insurance company

Grocery
$350 to $500 Depends on the luxury level you want

Household
$20 to $50 Barber, Bank Fees ...etc

Utilities
$145 to $180 this is two Mobile phones (with couples plan, which means unlimited free calls between
the couples), 1 Mbps Internet, and Home Phone. All from Rogers for $145 monthly.
You can add a cableTV for like $30 or $40

Clothing
$50 to $70 That's $600 to $840 per year, it's enough for winter and summer clothes (twice a
year), but again it depends on what you want to buy and from where

Entertainment
$100 to $200 Restaurants, Picnic, Hanging out ...etc. average restaurant cost for a family of three
is $50 to $75 (if it's a fancy restaurant)

Laundry
$40 to $50

Total Living Cost

$2088 to $3010
Not including the optional expenses below

Pre-School/Day care
$600 to $800
If you want to put your kid in a pre-school or a daycare you would be paying this amount

Electricity & Water
$80 to $150
This is most likely to be included with your rent

Rgds,Raj.
If you live close enough to the USA, plan shopping trips at least once a month. Especially for clothes and electronics.

I have friends who do their main shopping in the USA. It's much cheaper out there and I don't mean New York State. For Toronto dwellers think about Detroit.

I love Indian food - if you move to Vancouver can I come round your house for tea some time? :)

Seriously though home-cooked food is going to be cheaper and healthier than eating our or junk microwave food anyway.

I can't imagine a food bill for the month coming to $800 even for a family of 4. That's like £600 per month, which is insane! In the UK we spend maybe £150 to £200 per month on food (admittedly that is just 2 of us) so that's like $225 to $300 in CAD.

Wayne.

Hi,
I have received my first AOR for CSQ, still waiting for interview date or CSQ itself.

I have a question for you: I also qualify for the federal skilled worker category and was thinking of applying for that as well in July 2011 when the new session starts. Do you think that could create a problem for my CSQ process? Do the 2 systems interlink or connect to each other?

Let me know your thoughts.

Also do they call your currrent company and ex-company to verify your job? Have you read of any such verification cases?

Thanks
Harsha

I believe it is 08:30 to 03:00 but not sure, you might want to check with others too.

For day care, I dont have any personal experience but as of I heared from my co-workers. It is costly if you making regular wages then you pretty much pay everything to the day care.

When you guys get here please check with multicultural office I think government alloated lots of subsidaries(sorry if my speelings are wrong)... Try to get all the advantages that you get from government because it is all your tax money...ha..ha

Sorry I dont have any personal thoughts on these questions because I dint experience any!

Thanks,

Pradeep

Indira Prabhakaran.

I just wanted to add that a great store for food (they have other stuff too) is Costco. I shop here in US in Costco and that was the first thing I checked if Toronto has it, and yes they do! It is a membership type of store and they sell stuff in bulks (restaurants supply there also!) but you end up paying half the price then in the regular store.
www.costco.com

You got the price of transportation for Toronto right, but I just wanted to share a link with pricing:

So happy for you Indira! You are doing final preparations :)

Hi ane,

I believe you are registered nurse rite, may I am wrong It just came from my memory.

Yes sudbury is a small town compared with Toronto and major cities . Public transpotations are available, it cost you $60 for monthly pass. Population is around 124000 only. Not much crowd but there is nothing much to do here.

Please let me know if you want some specific answers about sudbury!

Thanks,

Pradeep

Hi!

Here are my two cents, having sp'ent two years in Edmonton I will tell you that if you have an international drivers licence you can get insurance in Edmonton and Calgary, I dont know about other cities, but it will cost you at least 250 CAD per month, my recomendation, take your home country drivers licence, you can use it for three months and get insurance, visit any registries office and do your learners test, with the learners you can get a cheaper insurance, around 220 a month but you can not drive by yourself, you must be accompanied byt a holder of a drivers licence class 5, do your road test and you can drive by yourself paying aroun 180 per month for your insurance, all test have a price, you can get a very good winter car for 4500, I padi 5500 for a cavalier 2003 and it was awesome for winter, in winter time consider special tires for your car ...:)
