Application for spousal Open work permit from India

Dear All,

My husband is with a closed work permit working in Canada as an IT professional.

I would like to join him there.

Meanwhile his company has suggested us to apply for Spousal OWP.

What are the documents needs to be submitted ? What is the processing time ?And should i also apply for some kind of dependent visa.

Any help,replies or links would be appreciated.

Hi ,
You will need all the documents which were required by your hubby...but you don't need LMO and offer letter.
Also, you will need marriage certificate, your hubby offer letter, income proof e.g. last six months bank statements.

Time line is 20 working days ..but nowadays there is quite a waiting ...It has been two months for me and still waiting for owp

Hi ,
I applied on 23rd October at VFS delhi and passport was recieved at canadioan high comission at 25th October.
Prior to that i got visitor visa for 1 year stamped in month of september and submitted medicals at that time.
For OWP i dn't have to submit medicals and hence i haven't heard anything from them apart from few mails stating it's in process.

Hi PryKaul,

Do we have to submit no objection letter/leave letter/resignation letter from our current employer ???

And also only OWP is enuf for us to land and live in canada with our husband.OR do we need to apply for any visa ???

Hi Krithika,
No letter is required..actually when you will apply for owp they will issue you an temporary residency visa first (of category worker).Along with this they will also issue a letter for WP. When you will land in canada you have to show that letter to immigration officer and you will get your WP then.

@Prykaul - Is your Visa process delayed as you also applied for Visitor visa which was approved as you mentioned. n can you please give the point wise list of all the docs you submitted for your application. As I have noticed that the normal Visa Process time for OWP is 1 month.
and any specific suggestion from your side ?

No, right now VO is very slow...may be because of student visa applications.

n do i need to resign from the IT company i am working with as my wedding is in April. and till then i will serve the notice period so that when visa comes, i can accompany my husband asap. Please tell me is my resignation will effect my visa application in any other way ?

Hi ,
Please refer the document checklist maintained at the cic or vfs website.
This includes proof of income, edu certificates, marriage certificate, spouse WP .

Resignation will not effect your visa....

But for OWP you will need marriage certificate and spousal work permit

Hi Prykaul,

Few ppl have advised that not to resign before i get Visa as it would show strong Social ties with my home country.

Since, you are going to Canada as a dependent, you do not have to show any social/economic ties with your country. You may resign as you get the Work Permit/Visa.

My Wife has also applied today and hope that she gets her visa within a month

Hi Eva

I did not advise you to resign. I just said that you do not have to show the social/economic ties.

She has attached the documents mentioned in the checklist (Schedule 1, IMM1295 and Family information). Alll my documents Pasport, my WP, My offer letter, Lst 2 months pay slips, letter of employment, my Bank statement and a copy of marriage certificate(notary attested). SHe handed her documents (all education documents). Also, handed her passport for VISA stamping

Thats all. I am keeping fingers crossed and hope that she gets visa soon.
