Hello, I'm 29 year old and my Bachelors is in Communication Engineering (from Malaysia). I have around 5+ years of experience working as Software Engineer.

I want to enrol for a certificate program from University of Calgary in Business Analysis, Intelligence, and Analytics. It is a 1 year program.

My question is, will there be chances of rejection based on this for any reason?

Can you please elaborate?
Funds, career prospects, education advancement, language skills, ties to home country, will return to home country, age, family in Canada, refusals in other countries etc. all are looked at in the study permit application. It is a certificate course not a masters.

Can you please elaborate?
You are taking a certificate course after bachelors and working experience. We have seen many refusals in almost similar profiles and in certificate course in general. There is a good chance for visa officers rejecting you just for taking that course which really provides no career progression.

Thank you all for the valuable replies! Much appreciated.

So if I change my program to full time MBA will that help?

Actually I'm genuinely trying to jump to non-technical field in my career and thought it would be good to have a certificate or degree from business field.

Jumping careers is not upon favourably by IRCC. Also if you are applying for MBA, make sure you are not applying to a low ranked private university

Yes MBA will increase the chance. But it is just a drop of the bucket. You would need to have strong profile overall taking in to consideration of what all Naturgrl said. Also you can try to take some course related to business that is higher than your last qualification but you would have to explain well why you want to change your field with good reasons in sop. Else they can reject you for taking a course that does not match your previous job/studies. Won't recommend it tho.

Thank you very much. Your replies are very valuable.

I totally get your explanations. Sorry I'm new to this whole thing.

So I was surveying few more courses over the time, and I came cross the following degree :

'Graduate Diploma of Engineering Leadership and Innovation' from Western University ( quite a reputed Uni). Now, this is not exactly business centric course but something that encompasses both the Engineering + Business segment in some way. Do you think if I apply for this, it would make for a stronger case?

I am sorry but I am not well informed on college and university and program specific details. However I checked western universities official website and found out that is an 8 month diploma course and a graduate diploma. Usually graduate diploma courses are aimed at student who are just graduated afaik. I might be wrong tho.

My personal recommendation for you would be selecting a masters since you have work experience of 5+ years. Study permits really have good approval rate for master programs from what I have seen. Don't take my words for it, there are senior members here who can give much better insight than me or people with experience in this matter. Wait for their reply.

This is a grad diploma, not Master's. And it is unrelated to your previous education. Only a degree like MBA or specialized program will allow them to digest a change in field.
