So I understand what to send to the FBI now. What do I bring to the police station for the fingerprints...just the application with the instructions on how to do the prints and also proof of ID? does it cost anything to do the prints? we're in the states. after that's done, are we set to send it off to FBI w/ all the items on the FBI checklist? do we just walk into the police station to do this by the way?

My local police station in Michigan wouldn't do the prints. Directed me to a private firm who does background checks and fingerprints, mostly for police recruits.

I paid about $20. Needed to show state ID. They had the magic card, and I just dropped it in the mail to the FBI with a credit card payment form. In six (6) weeks I had a 8 1/2x11 envelope from them with their magic non-copyable document.

btw, I was in Canada when I decided to get a second copy of the 'statement of no record' -- was concerned about expiry dates -- and went to the RCMP in BC. They were going to charge $26, and could only do it when there was a free officer of the right variety available. I went about four (4) times, and gave up since I was heading back to the States.

Thanks for letting me know. Did you have to make an app't with the place they directed you to? or did you just walk in? I hope it'll be easy process for my husband.

When I got mine done in Georgia, I showed a driver's license and paid about $10.

I called to make an appointment, but they told me I didn't need one and gave me directions as to how to get there.

Thanks Isometry!

Here in NY you can have them taken for free at any State Police station

We're in Oregon, so we'll see what happens.
