Am I the only one who thinks the income eligibility is too stringent?

Hi, I got my PR middle of 2017 and was looking forward in sponsoring my dad until I saw the income requirements. I have a family of 5 members and the requirement for last 3 years has to be above $77k annually. I do not understand why is income the only factor for consideration ? Noted on the financial burden on the government but shouldn't the financial status of the individual be considered? If the person to be sponsored is financially independently, shouldn't that be a bonus point? My dad is a retiree with a decent amount of asset. He is still energetic and very affluent. Speaks and write good English. When he lived with us during our first year in Vancouver, he was very active in social work like volunteering in the community clubs. He even obtained awards from the community for excellent contribution. He made so many new friends here but he was only allow to stay for 6 months. Now that we finally get our PR, out dream of sponsoring him got shattered by the income requirement.

He is currently living alone in my hometown. Not only can he live with his family, it will also be of great help looking after domestic matters when both my husband and myself are at work. I have 3 children and having a grandparent at home will certainly lessen our burden, thus we can be more focus in developing our career here.

I am hoping to garner some support from the like minded community so that CIC can hear us. I am not hoping for a change overnight, but at least they will gather some feedback from the ground and make some informed decisions.Their decision on these requirements will certainly impact my family and I believe to many of you too.

Any comments and feedback are welcomed!

Maybe I'm looking at a wrong chart but I seen this :

Federal Income Tables
Low Income Cut-Off (LICO)

Size of Family Unit Minimum necessary gross income
1 person (your child or grandchild) $24,949
2 persons $31,061
3 persons $38,185
4 persons $46,362
5 persons $52,583
6 persons $59,304
7 persons $66,027

I agree that the person assets should be taken into consideration. However I do understand the need for the sponsor to make a certain amount of money, considering they need to sign an undertaking agreement. good luck. I how everything works out for you

I guess the reason why asset is not used in assessing the lico because it will create a false premise that the pgp program is design for the wealthy, since asset will be considered in the assessment. Also wealth (asset) can't be taxed like income and does not deem to be contributing to our society. At least in your case it is not that difficult to achieve $52583 if both you and your spouse are working.

Hello JYC and shalenna, thank you so much for your sharing. I hope I am looking at the wrong chart then as yours look more realistic. I had been looking at this one on CIC website

Total number of persons you would be responsible for Minimum income required for the 3 taxation years right before the date of your application
2018Footnote1
2017Footnote1 2016Footnote1 2015Footnote1
2 persons
$40,379 $39,813 $39,372 $38,618
3 persons $49,641 $48,945 $48,404 $47,476
4 persons $60,271 $59,426 $58,768 $57,642
5 persons $68,358 $67,400 $66,654 $65,377
6 persons $77,095 $76,015 $75,174 $73,733
7 persons
$85,835 $84,631 $83,695 $82,091
If more than 7 persons, for each additional person, add: $8,740 $8,616 $8,521 $8,358

It will be 6 persons including my dad to be sponsored. I hope I am wrong. Do enlightened me guys...thanks much!

LICO is too low in my opinion. Many families don't have the luxury of their parents being financially self-sufficient and would struggle if they had to pay for many health-related expenses for their parents especially if they are living in the GTA or greater Vancouver area. First of all it is hard to 100% verify assets of family members in many countries. Also would favour the wealthy. The supervisa was created exactly for your situation.
