Hello,
I am trying to use my experience as a graduate assistant in order to qualify for CEC.
I have few questions regarding the experience requirement for international graudates:

1. Does my experience have to be continuous?
2. CIC says that my experience has to be gained within 24 months preceding the "date of application". what is date of application? is this a date when CIC begin to process my case? or is this a date of the receipt stamped at the post office? is this the date that I wrote on my application (with my signature)? what is it?

thank you

1. The experience doesn't have to be continuous. It just has to satisfy the duration and NOC requirements i.e. atleast 12 months full-time or part-time equivalent (for graduate stream); and NOC type 0, or level A or B occupation.

See the definition of full-time work experience:
“Full-time work” is defined as requiring at least 37.5 hours of work per week. For the Canadian Experience Class full-time equivalence, or 1,950 hours of paid employment over a period at least of 12 months will also be considered. The full-time work experience requirement may be met by the equivalent in part-time paid work experience, e.g. more than one part-time job held simultaneously or one or more part-time jobs held over the equivalent of one year of full-time work. Experience can be calculated by adding up the number of weeks of full-time work, i.e. 37.5 hours per week in one job or a total of at least 37.5 hours per week in more than one job, in one or more of the NOC categories.

2. The date of application is the date that the application (if properly completed) is received by the visa office. For CIC's application processing purposes, they set the 'application received date" as the 'lock-in date'.

so my work experience has to be 24 months preceding the date that CIC received my application?

or is it 24 months preceding the date that they started processing my case (they can receive my application well before they start processing my case)?

thanks

Hi,

Yes, the work experience has to be 24 months preceding the date that a properly completely application package is received at the visa office. (See the CEC Instruction guide Page 10 - the * sign explains this).

...how long does it normally take for CIC to "receive" my application(assume that it is complete, and assume that it took couple days for the application package to arrive at CIC centre through the mail system)?

I know that it takes couple months for me to receive the "acknowledgement of receipt" letter. Does my experience have to be occured 24 months preceeding the date that the "acknowledgement of receipt" is made?

The way it works is that when CIC receives your package at Buffalo, they note the date when package is received. However, they will not date-stamp the application until they have checked for completeness - if it's positive, the date stamped will be the date the application was received.
In my opinion, what's more important is the date that the visa office receives your application and so you should estimate and make sure that the application is received at a date that falls within the 24 months period. To be safe, send your application as soon as you qualify i.e. as soon as you have the 12 months work experience.

Please read through the CEC Operational Manual to know more about the procedures for receiving applications at the visa office

thank you for your reply:
just to make it double sure,
so the

(date of application) = ( date of application package received ) = (the date when the application package arrives at CIC centre via postal system)

am I correct?
